it has a shifter just no boot because its ripped from people working on the car. it never used to smoke before.

You may have greater problems other than missing a shift boot. I would start looking for an oil leak, or exhaust leak, not to mention the fumes coming into the car are toxic.

I get smoke in the cockpit too. It's an oil leak -- main rear seal -- that drips onto the exhaust, then slips into the cabin.

I urge you, however, to make sure it's not exhaust fumes. Check the gaskets where the Y-pipe meets the manifold ... hell check the whole system. That stuff can kill you. Seriously.

I had the same issue, as well as smoke out the back of the car, and it only happened at 5000+ rpm. It was an oil leak that got all over the underside of the car, including the exhaust, which caused the smoke. There were 3 sources: the rear camshaft seal (the one with the cork gasket), the lower balance shaft rear plug (it was fairly loose), and the upper balance shaft rear plug (it was super loose). The solution was simple and cheap... I pulled the three 10mm bolts to get to the rear camshaft seal and replaced the leaky cork gasket with Permatex Ultra-Grey. Then I also used it to seal up both balance shaft rear plugs from the outside. None of them have leaked a drop of oil ever since.

yup. on mine the oil pan gasket leaks, as well as both front oil seals on the balance shafts. a very slight leak on the rear of the cam tower too. It doesnt drip oil so it doesnt bother me. no smoke either. I doubt I'll fix them. I really just want to swap the motor out with an ls1 or a turbo or 968 engine.
