It's time for a new cassette box (console/armrest) hinge for my '86 951. I recall seeing a metal replacement (not just a piano hinge), but I don't remember who sells it, and I can't find it online or in Pano, Excellence, or the usual catalogs.
Does anyone know who the vendor is?
Does anyone have one of these? Is it any good, or should I stick with the factory plastic?
Thanks.

I recall seeing an ad for the metal hinge, saying something like "Why replace your broken plastic hinge with another plastic hinge which will also break soon, when you can replace it with a metal hinge which will never break?"
Anyone know about this ad?

Oh, come on. It's like $30 bucks from Pelican and like $20 from PartsHeaven.

if it's breaking with such frequency, what are you doing to it??? Mine never broke in the 6 or 7 years I had the NA....and in the S2, it was broken when returned from the wrench after the trans work....hanging on by a 'thread'. Picked up a brand new one at Hershey for $20.
Don't get me wrong...I'd like to find a metal one so I don't have to worry about how I may lean on it when working on the car...but it's not like it breaks once a month.

or folding down the rear seats and opening the hatch....
seriously...I've climbed over mine several times...as long as you're carefull it will not break.

Those who have used the piano hinge...what type of screws did you use?
I have replaced two hinges. Broke both of them when leaning into the car to fix something else.
The damn hinge rips like a piece of paper.

I'm going through mine about once a year. It's no biggie to replace but it is somehow slightly offensive to have such a cheesy part on the car.
I recall seeing a metal replacement being mentioned somewhere, maybe it was from Clark's garage. I think it's a good idea and maybe somebody with some fabrication skills wants to put together a few to sell.
