Rice or Nice: Red gauge lighting.
#20
Thanks for the compliments. I had some trouble with bulb test fitment and I have decided to scrap the LED mission all together. Wish me luck on my electrical gremlin search. Me thinks it is in the turn signal switch. I bet on it. I bought a replacement switch at Performance/Automotion yesterday (along with some great vacuum hoses).

FWIW rd is the only color of lighting in aircraft designed specifically for night attack, such as the old A-6 and some of the super hornets. Red is a FAR better color because it doesn't destroy your night vision.
So, rice or not, red is the only LED color that has a legitimate and beneficial function.
I say do it.
BTW, I haven't seen an AUDI in 20 years without all red interior guage and button lighting.

Blue has the opposite effect as red - it will destroy night vision faster than you can say "blinding light". Personally I don't like blue gauges, they look ricey to me.
And on the cluster topic, I think the late cluster is clean and nice, but pretty boring. It's like any cluster. The early gauge pods have character.... I just didn't like how they were inside 3 big tunnels. I'm working on a new back plate like Mike's but with the original gauges (deleted cones).

Are you sure those are led's? Every car dash I have seen is all regular bulbs with tinted plastic pieces over them for whatever color. All the green dashes in toyotas and domestics are just little green covers over the bulbs that can then be adjusted for brightness.
Not to mention that I have not heard of any car using led's for gauge lighting from the factory. The led's light is far to directed to light up a gauge panel from behind compared to a regular bulb. You'd need several led's to get the same coverage as one regular bulb.
A LED will not dim very much. LED's are either on or off.
