Early Type 944 Gauge Lights Info
I just went through the processes of rebuilding several of my gauges and I thought I would change the lights out as well.
As posted in Clarks Garage the reccomended bulb is a Sylvania 194 - HOWEVER that bulb only fits late model gauges - the early type gauges dont have the same spade to fit in the plug so here are the correct bulb #'s to upgrade early gauges.
The STOCK bulb is a #37 - it is .5 candlepower at 1.2W.
A #74 bulb will fit in the gauge and it is .7 candlepower at 1.4W
A #70 bulb will fit as well it is 1.5 candlepower at 2.1W
Finally the bulb I am using is a #24 which is 2 candlepower at 3.36 watts. It made a huge difference in the dim gauges, they seem to be fine as far as heat and current draw (I believe .24Amps.) So far it is literally night and day - especially on the clock and oil pressure gauge.

Thanks for the info! When I re-did all of my gauges, I swapped them out with the next brightest set. Wish I had known this though as I'd probably go with the ones you did.

Good info!
Send an email to Clark - he's been known to update procedures.

I had the #70 2.1 watt bulbs in my early car for a few years... no ill effects and it made a huge difference in the brightness.
I found the bulbs at a local imported car parts shop - they deal with the VDO guages all the time and had a bunch of tiny instrument bulbs in stock.
