Default TPS: what is the output signal? (thinking of automatic cutouts)

Basically, I'm thinking of putting electronic cutouts on my exhaust system, but I'm trying to make them fancy. The new cars (BMW) that have the mufflers that open up valves and whatnot to allow for more exhaust flow when flooring it or whatever have me thinking of ways to replicate this effect.

So, my question is what kind of output signal is sent from the tps? Is this a reostat that increases voltage as it opens more, or is it an on/off type signal?

My idea is to have the cutouts in place in the exhaust system, and then have them automatically open once the throttle is depressed a certain amount, say 90%. I have a feeling that in order to get a straight on/off signal at a certain percentage of throttle opening will have to come from the computer though...

Any suggestions/thoughts would be appreciated.

Of course if this looks like its going to be a lot of work I'll simply live with having to press a switch to make the cutouts engage. So much work though...

TPS sensors are reostats, There may be an A/C cut out switch that when the gas is floored turns off the AC compressor (it would be an on/off switch), that would be a good signal for what you are thinking (if you have one). Good Luck.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that. Good call. Thanks!

Anybody know the wiring/control system involved with the car partially disengaging the a/c system when at full throttle?

THE 944 TPS IS NOT A REOSTAT. It's a 2 position switch. At idle pin 2 and 18 are connected, at about 80% throttle pin 18 and 3 are connected no varying resistance whatsoever.

You're talking about 944 N/A TPS, guy who asked seems to have turbo, and it has rheostat TPS.

Bill,

Find a nice WOT switch (used w/ nitrous systems) and adjust it to the 90% point you describe.

Sorry thought S2 and turbo had the same TPS. MSD smart switch PN/8966 would be the ticket. http://www.msdignition.com/2006/06-18.htm

Good thought. Any idea what is required to hook one of these up?

In my case since I have a turbo, if I were to have exhaust dumps I would cut out all the muffler and cat piping, which would then allow the turbo to spool up much sooner and with less resistance, causing increased power. One of the cutout sites I was looking at was claiming that a stock wrx and neon srt4 each made 40hp with stock turbo using cutouts.
