So Haynes said the way to remove the hatch pistons was to gently twist them until they come off. Well, doing so with one of them snapped the plastic bits at both ends (please tell me they're just with the piston and not a crucial part of the car!), leaving just the ball mount thingy on the hatch.
How in the name of Zeus' butthole do I get the other one off without the same result?
Also, do I need special Porsche 944 pistons, or can I just get generic ones at the local big box store?

Yes, they come with the lift struts, not part of the car.
Oh, and you can get generic ones aslong as they have the same ball/socket ends, but if you have a rear defroster, you need ones with the wire for them. Also, you will need the correct strength strut, they do come in several rates.

oem porsche pistons do not have metal clips you have to use a very little flat blade screwdriver and in the center of the ends there is a little indent pull that pin back its plastic so dont brake it , and then the ends can be poped off.use a big flat blade screwdriver for that . if you want a rear defroster you will need the pistons that have the wire connections on it .

Ah, okay, that sounds about right, I do recall seeing those tab things. I'll be sure to check that tomorrow. Thanks!
It's worth noting that with two pistons the hatch barely stayed open, but with one removed it won't stay open at all. Damn thing is pretty heavy!
I suspect those pistons are one reason why it's so hard to open (the others being a sticky latch and grungy bolt-plug things).

if the latch is sticky then go get some white spray grease and lub it . lift the carpet on the inner rear body panel and lub the back side of the lock cylinder and work it in . that should free things up and do the hood and door latches , sence you have the can in your hand . dont use in the lock cylinders !use silicone spray for cylinders . porsches , glass rear haches do have alot of flex to them you should always lift it from the center.
