Default handbrake cable PITA....

guys,

I am trying to change out a broken handbrake cable on my 89/NA. The cable goes thru a tube in the floor and it liiks like there is a sleave on the cable that presses into this tube. How do I get the old one out. It seems really stuck....
Thanks

Remove the brake lever. Unscrew the flat piece of metal that attaches to the hook on the brake lever. Remove the lock nut and spring. From under the car, pull on the parking brake cable and it will slide out of the tube.

I already have everything disconnected inside. Underneath I gave the flexable (plastic) cable shield a yank and it mostly came out of the tube. when I look at my new cable it has a metal collar that is attached on the end of the shield and looks like it goes into the tube first before the shield does. If i look very closely at my tube i can see the collar, but it is like one with the tube... it wont budge. It should just pull out right?
