Definetly check for those vacuum leaks and do the pressure and delivery test. After that go for the fuel filter.
You should just go ahead and replace it because if the car had sat for a long time some of the fuel could have carmelized and then been dislodged once you started driving it and using injector cleaner.
If the PO left the car in a bad state odds are he never even knew there was an 02 sensor which is critical to the Motronic design so definetly go after that too and smooth running should return. It's alot to cover but it shouldnt take more than a couple hours all together.

Update: turns out I just ran out of gas! Damn tank was close to bone dry.
I have got to get that fuel gauge fixed (and keep an eye on that mileage gauge) ...

just use your odometer trip mileage to determine when your fuel tank is almost empty and reset it every time you refill. That's what I do with my pickup truck. It gets about 300mi to a tank, the 944 should obviously do better.

The trip odometer won't reset, it seems, though the damn switch seems to wonky and fragile I'm afraid to even push it.
Were the Porsche engineers loaded on shnapps when they designed that, by the way?

I might've stripped the gears, but I'm not sure because I pushed gently and stopped when I encountered resistance.
I gotta say, that is one MESSED UP design for a trip odometer. I mean how the hell can you have one that can't be reset while driving? And with such a screwed up button? What's the thinking with that?
