Question clutch fork question

I have just completed the install portion of a clutch job on an 83 944 N/A. In preparing to put everything back together i have this question. After getting the bell housing back on with the fork and fork retaining pin in place, should the fork have pressure on it when pressing on the cup end through the bell housing opening? This one moves back and forth freely. Any help greatly appreciated.

if i recall it will have some play, but you shouldn't be able to push it all the way back because of the throw-out bearing. putting your slave cylinder up to it, it should push the rod into the slave, if it doesnt give that resistance, then something is askew.

Thanks for your reply. I checked again and the fork only has about 1/2 inch of play. With lots of pressure i can feel the springs doing their job.
This has been some undertaking. just about all the possible gremlins i have read about on this forum, i have experienced...frozen sensors, a fork pin that just would not come out, and now alignment issues with the torque tube and transaxle. Be that as it may, i love the car and am sure there is a sense of accomplishment for all of you out there who have successfully completed a clutch job. without the expertise and help from members of this forum, i would never attempt something like this. thanks to all of you who contribute.
