Default Driveaxle

I need to replace my right rear driveaxle, how difficult is this to do? I have an 1985/2 944.

Thanks in advance.

Easy enough provided you have the right tools! Check www.clarks-garage.com.

Use the directions on Clark's Garage site as described above. Also, consider changing the left side axle as well, or at least inspecting it if it hasn't been done recently.

Under what topic are the instructions on Clark's Garage? I don't see an entry for Driveaxle.

Check under CV. It's a snap provided you have the right tools. Removal per side is what... 10 minutes jack to jack?

Is it as easy as to remove the bolts and replace with the new axle? Or is there more to it?

Right rear is a tiny bit easier than the other side (exhaust system). If you have a good half inch socket and some long impact extensions, you can easily reach the tranny side bolts out from under the car. The wheel sides are right there (obviously). Either side, a piece of cake. Take off the tranny side first during removal and install the wheel side first when installing. Those bolts were no problem so long as you have the European internal wrench set/12pt/cheesehead or whatever they call those god forsaken bolts. Messy business packing those axles. Get them at Kragen for ~66 bucks a side (75 dollar refundable core charge) courtesy of Kuhl951. Limited lifetime guarantee.

If you don't have car ramps or jackstands, you will need some. You have to get the rear end of the car up to get under there. I think car ramps are safer...

No its as easy as that but, theres always a but.... this particular set up is prone to problems in getting and keeping the special tripple square bolts tight. I think they are to be torqued to something like 30 ft pounds which is easy enough if you can keep the triple square bit "square" in the head of the bolt. But even so they are likely to come loose on you in oh about 1000 miles. That can even get ya stranded. You can either buy new bolts, (Paragon $1. ea) that have a thread locker on them or you can clean up your old ones with a toothbrush & brake cleaner and apply thread locker. The problem is made worse by the lube in the CV, which when spinning has grease that migrates outward and into the the loose threads of the cv/stub bolts. If done right, the bolts are trouble free but getting the threads clean and getting them assembled can be a trick.
BTW... CV bolts is one of the mandatory 944 merit badges...;] Eagle Scout wannabe...Bruce
PS... don't let a axle hang by the inner CV - this can break the inner CV cage... BTDT
