going to be ordering the head gasket kit from paragon, and it looks like it includes new valve seats, is that correct?

also, if i get valve guides, will they fit fine if they have been replaced before?

Andrew, the headgasket kit from Victor Reinz (which Paragon carries) does include the stem seals.

Valve guides will fit fine, no need for oversize or anything.

The gasket set will not have valve seats but the machine shop will be able to grind the valves/seats as part of a standard 3 or 5 angle valve job. If your timing belt just slipped a tooth or 2 before it settles, you may be lucky and have no bent valves. If it did jump more and then caught on "with the timing way off" while turning over, its possible to bend all 8.

Seats are the metal ring that is embedded in the cylinder head where the valve seats on when its closed. they have to grind the seat 3 angles along with the valve for a 3 angle valve job and 5 for 5 angles. You get the idea.

That head looks like it needs to be rebuilt from the looks of the exhaust ports so you are not doing it in vain.

yeah, i also found my 1-4 manifold where it was once repaired from a crack, seems to be cracked again and there is some exhaust leaking there also. might try to find a set on ebay of updated ones, or just re-weld these

My point is the 85 corvette costs about as much as the 944 at that time and the engine with 230hp is absolutely junk in terms of casting quality and tolerance standards so you can do a lot to them to extract power. However, even stock with poor quality, the v8 engine ran great and I got 25.2 mpg driving from L. A. to San Diego with that funky 4+3 speed manual transmission. That engine started to knock at 125k miles but it had something to do with me doing donuts at the skidpad for 45 seconds at redline back in the old days. I actually burned 25 percent of the crappy tires in one shot.

If I can find a 88+ fiero GT stick cheap, I would buy it.
Honestly, I'm not a big fan of 80s GM. They had great ideas with every motor they built, but had to cut quality and technology to meet emissions / regulations. Their best motor was the 2.3 Quad-4 HO with 190hp and they only produced it for a few years. 350s throughout the entire 80s just plain sucked...

The 350 sbc is great for dropping into a car that you want to be period correct... otherwise you go with at least an LT1 motor.

But, the HUGE displacement motors of the 60s / 70s are still really awesome, and can be fitted with the best parts that modern technology has to offer.

If you ever did want a Fiero, get an 88 Formula or an 85 GT. An 88 GT is basically an attempt to make an inexpensive car luxurious... why bother? The 88 Formula does everything the GT does, and better, with 250-300 fewer pounds!!!
