Default Sunroof problem

I need help figuring out what's wrong with my sunroof. When I bought the car the roof would open, but I would have to push on the piece of metal, the triangular shaped piece at the front center of the head panel. It would close without having to push on it. Then it open if I pushed on it, but not close at all. I had to close it manually. Last time I took it for a drive I pushed on the metal piece and it opened without me pushing on the switch on the center console. Still had to close it manually. The lift arms have never retracted in the time I've had the car.

Anyone know what the problem is? Is it the switch?

This won't help you right now... but I'm getting ready to re-do the entire sunroof mechanism. I'm completely going through my 84/944. I've replaced basically every piece in the interior. I'll end up on the sunroof in a couple of weeks at which point I'll document everything and share it with you if you think it might help?

Check out the sunroof write up at Clark's Garage , its has a very detailed description of how everything works and some trouble shooting guides. It's in the Garage Shop section.
