That's the early glass hderr... it's actually an inch or so narrower. Can you post pictures of the edges of your glass at the A pillars?

I've had three of those at my house now, and each one when test fit had a .5" gap on either side. The block size on the later glass is different.

FW 360 = early
FW 505 = late

I dont think the 968 windshield fits and its also $600. The block size is different according to the Safelite book.

I had Sentry Glass in Indianapolis put one in my car for $310.70 including install...it's a late model size w/ no antenna. They did a great job and I couldn't be happier (except for the massive rock that hit my windshield at the Sebring club race!!!).

I have a windshield that needs replacement on my 86 and i'm thinking of going the no-antenna route. It just seems like the $300 or so premium for an antenna isnt worth it.
I'll still get AM on the radio wont it? I'm assuming FM reception will be damaged or is there enough wiring in there to act as a small antenna?

in the DC area I got quoted $450-500 installed for safelite, $550-600 installed for St.Germain (oem), including a new gasket. none of the shops would come to me for a home install, however. they said it was a 2 person job and wd only do it in their shop. I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Actually it's the opposite. You will lose AM, but most FM should come in OK, but not great.

I just went with SafeLife to do my replacement on the 1986 944, and they came with a windshield that was too narrow by roughly and inch. it also arrived with molding around the top and sides, but rubber not chrome. We threw the old cracked windshield back in until I can figure out what I actually need.

I'm confused after reading this, and other posts about the same topic. Some say an antenna windshield is the only option. Others say that they've found non-antenna windshields that fit. I do not know which way to go at this point.

Are you absolutely positive that you need the FW505 in a 1986 944? Are the windshields the same post 85.5 for all years?

ExitWound, I posted above because I had the exact same experience as you. Safelite will always show up with PPG FW 360, as their computer shows that is the only windshield for 44's. But it is NOT the right block size for late cars, it is FAR too narrow.

Some people have installed that glass in a late car, however it will need extra seals or caulk and frankly I was not comfortable with that in a track car. (See hderr's pics above)

The correct size for any windshield 85.5+ is the FW 505... that glass is antenna glass. PPG does NOT make a correct size replacement non-antenna glass for late cars. Sekurit glass is OEM brand, PPG is aftermarket only. FW 505 has been superceeded by FW 603 IIRC, which Safelite will tell is NLA.

I personally conducted all the research on this topic for myself, my facts are NOT based on anyone else's posts. It took me 3 months to get the proper windshield, and in the end I had a local indy glass guy recommended by my Audi shop. He found the Sekurit antenna glass for $400 installed. I actually cut the pigtail for the antenna off as I have no radio. It is a waste of money but there is NO OPTION if you want the correct fit for your late car. It sucks, but trust me, if I could have found one cheaper, I would have it. I made over 100 phone calls, and it doesn't exist. There's a huge thread about the glass if you search under my name.

Others may have done it, others may say it fits. You have seen now with your own eyes that it does not, same as my experience... I have never seen a late non-antenna windshield... it doesn't exist in the CORRECT block size for late cars - Safelite read me the sizes out of their catalogs. I will change my opinion if some can show me one (944 glass, not 968) that is NOT labeled FW 360. Until then I stand by my own research.
