Question for anyone who's familiar with both 944s and 968s....
What do you think of 968s compared to 944s in terms of performance, reliability and generally being fun to drive? I've done some googling around and it looks like a 968 would be a blast to drive... Any thoughts?

The only thing I've heard negative about the 968 is that it is heavier than an earlier 944 or 924. But I think that's not really a valid argument, given that most of the 944 line weigh in around 3000 lbs.
If there is a couple extra hundred pounds in the 968, it is more than offset by the additional power it has. Personally, I feel that the power of a naturally aspirated motor is more beneficial, especially on the track where the exit speed of a corner is critical.
Like all cars, the 968 has it's known list of things that can go wrong like the ring and pinion thingy. But that shouldn't discourage you from looking at this car, IMHO.
My $0.42,

+1 on 968 being ultimate iteration of the breed. However, my dream date would be the 968 driveline in a clean 951 tub. The 928/993 inspired cladding doesn't do much for me, except maybe for the rear fascia.

I guess your talking about the 944NA and not the turbo version. If so go for the 968.....they have more power and are more refined but they definately cost more than a 944.

I looked long and hard at a 968 before going with my NA...the NA had two things going for it. One of course was cost, after necessary repairs, the NA was 10k less than the 968s I was looking at, and the other was the rad 80's pop-up headlights.
Obviously the 968 was much faster, but as a DD I found I didn't care as much as I thought I would.

Oh yeah, thats another point. Not having driven a 968, but having seen them sitting next to a 944/951, it is definitely obvious that the cars were built at different plants. Everything in the 968 is just so much more well put together. The engine bay doesn't look all ghetto with the ziptied wires and whatnot, for example.

I don't love the body of the 968 as much as the 944 - the '44 is just sexier somehow. But I would love to stuff in the 968 motor and transaxle one day.
