Question Whining noise from the rear...

at low speed only, coming from the rear, independent on the brakes.
Is it a wheel bearing, or something else? No noise when I spin a wheel when on the jack stands. The right rear wheel has a bit of play, the left almost none.
thanks

Funny, butt you didn't read it carefully: it says whining noise at low speed, not high speed

that doesn't sound too good.
Is there a way of testing it?

in the middle of the event - that sucks.
But I still think (hope) it's a wheel bearing in my case.

Do you remember under what conditions you could hear the whining? Low speed?, under acceleration, etc.

A wheel bearing will traditionally make a noise that gets louder as you go faster. Low speed only noise would make me think there's something w/ the transmission. If one of the wheels has play, replace the bearings anyways. They are fairly simple to do on an 83, and if the noise goes away, then you've solved both problems.

Fixed: I was suggested to look at the brakes; I filed the "inner-radius" edges of the rear pads where it was rubbing against the unevenly-worn disk, and put red paste behind the pads (although there were anti-squeal pads before). One of the two things helped, although it's not clear to me why, considering that the noise didn't feel correlated with application of the brakes.
