I always took the plate off of my other 944 and would drive home with that plate on the car. I figured dont do anything stupid and I always drove through the night. That is how I got Tim Strayers 83 944 home when I bought it.

I live in CT and recently got temp tags for my 86 951. Temp tags are given out for the sole purpose of getting the car emssion tested. When you register for temp tags you are actually registering the vehicle, paying for the temp tag and paying tax (6%) on the purchase price. The 10-day temp tag affords you time to get the emissions tested. Once tested, you take the receipt and printout back to the DMV to complete the registration process and pay for real tags. I know this does not help you since you will register the vehicle out of state. That said, PA must have a similiar program. Are there any car dealers you are friendly with? Perhaps they can help or lend you a dealer plate?
