Agreed there several people who should not even lift the hood on anything, let
alone try something real techie. However, it is not rocket science!
I know a professional dentist (does implants and other specialist stuff) who
rebuilt a tranny (automatic) in his Nissan. Took him a few weeks but it
worked great.
Like somebody else said, know your limits!

Default ok...

I just emailed the PO who is usually helpful with stuff like this asking if he would come by and help identify the issue because I am not 100% positive that my tranny is dead. I also called the shop and told them the story, the owner who has worked on Porsches for 25+ years seemed somewhat baffled and confused. I explained that I could not drive the car back to the shop and he said he will call me tomorrow or thurs reguarding transportation.

I am not exactly happy, but glad that he had the initiative to arrage transportation. I will see what m the PO says. Then, most likely, have the shop take a look at it. If they say it will be over $800 to fix and its not something impossible to DIY (i.e. transmission), I will just take it home and hopefully enlist some the help of some generous listers. If he says it will be under 800 and gets on his hands and knees and begs my forgiveness, then I will let them fix it. If the **** hits the fan and its over 1200$ then the car will be at the mercy of ebayers and I will lease an 04 rx-8 or something.

Thanks for the help
-Seb

Yes, quite funny, and while I said it wasn't brain surgery, I completely see your point -- and I'm sure there are things other people can do that I know not to attempt -- like my taxes. I can't do taxes to save my life. It just isn't possible for me. I've tried and get so tangled up and confused I let the dog do it... Then my accountant says, "who did this?!" When I say the dog, he says, "well, the paw prints are in the right place, but who the hell put these numbers in?!"

I also, to this day, have never been able to sucessfully ballance a checkbook.

But by golly I can change a transmission in about an hour!

OK, just what do you use to remove the axle to tranny bolts, they look like torx but it didn't work.???

LOL, my stomach hurts.
Bravo for the well written article.
Thank god for clarks garage.

As for the torx comment, they are 8 mm 12 point internal tools.
Also known as cheeseheads, or triplesquares.

They are used on GMs somewhere (brakes? head?) and volkswagens on the head.
Your FLAPS (shucks, napa, carquest, autozone) should have them, shucks has them in sets (6mm 8mm 10mm 12mm) and napa has them in singles.

Clean out the bolt before you try to take it out, or you will bend the tool.
Just ensure it's fully seated before you apply torque on it (first hand... 3 days to replace a damn CV)

Ok, before you go ballistic on your mechanic, please realize that things will break on 15+ year old cars.

So you say you're into your car $11k? That's a drop in the bucket. I've owned my 944S2 since 2001, and probably have norht of $40k 'invested' in it. Stuff like a new head once mine cracked, new PS pump kit, new suspension, new gaskets and seals, miscellaneous electrical issues that needed to be tracked down...etc. Granted, my car regularly sees track time, but it is a well known fact that the upkeep for Porsches isn't cheap.

That said, my bro-in-law with in a similar situation as you -- he had a 1987 944 n/a as his daily driver. This past December, he sold it after realizing that he just couldn't keep up with the maintenance costs.

Oh, and one more thing --
MUD FLAPS? Are you kidding?!?! I guess it's a South Jersey thing....

if it is the transmission, that's not so bad, the tranny looks easier to replace than say the oil pan gasket. It's located in a fairly easy area to access being in the rear, I would think it's pretty straight forward to do , just need tools and probably help from another person.

Maybe thats a potential insight as to the cause of all these problems - he's rallying the car.

my 944 is my DD and I live in a very rocky part of NJ and during winter / autumn , I get gratuitous amounts of leaves and salty snow in my wells and under my rear valance. as most people know, it is a bitch to clean out and it makes your car rust. I would like to slow that inevitable process down by putting AUTOCROSS SPLASH guards on. Here are pix.

ps. I also travel to Vermont 4-5 times a year where the weather isnt great.

PPS. the car is still sitting in my driveway because I have been very busy and will get it flat-bedded to the shop to see what is wrong on fri or sat.
