I believe the bushing acts as a precise pivot point when adjusting the reference sensor height. The other end is slotted. If they relied only on the bolt as a pivot there would be enough play to mess up the setting. Cut the sensor opening open all the way to the bellhousing face and do yourself a big favor for next time.
