tensioning the balance belt - please clear up
Hi,
I have read the clarks notes and the ones from the workshop manual.
Just to clear up a few things.
1. do I turn the tensioner clockwise OR anti clockwise to tighten. Isn't there an error in some of the print or did that refer to the timing belt?
2. Setting the roller guide. Not too clear on this after reading the book.
I assume when tensioning the belt the roller guide should not have any contact?
The book talks of pre-tensioning the belt 0 - 1mm. What do they mean by this?
So the under side of the roller requires a 0.5mm gap between it and the belt running over the lower balance shaft?
If this is correct, what gap if any should there be between the roller and belt on the upper face?

On the early cars you turn the timing belt tensioner counterclockwise to increase tension on the belt. For the balance shaft you do the opposite - turn the tensioner clockwise to increase tension on the belt. The BS belt roller guide should not contact the belt when tensioning it. After correct tension is set, the roller is rotated CCW until it deflects the belt by 1 - 2 mm (40 to 80 thousandths). I don't know what the exact deal is on the later cars with the spring loaded tensioner.

^^ Mike C. got it. The balance shaft tension procedure is the same on all 944s and 968s.
Check this out, from Clark's. Make your tensioners like the ones in the pic (like Mike C. said).
