I'll tackle it again tonight. So far I have
- started with a plastic cap (3/8 ratchet) - rachet square striped.
- steel cap with 3/8 inch rachet connector - slipped and spun around the filter
- steel oil filter band wrench - simply crushed in the side
- tapped a screw driver through perpendicular, turned and ripped the metal side
- flexible strap all the way to the base with 1/2'' rachet connection - finished crushing the can

I've just punched a screwdriver through the side and used it like a handle before. The problem is tightening the filter too much. You only need a bout 3/4 turn pas hand tight

Items you will need:
sliding T-handle
Put extension on t-bar, place t-bar under washers.
With wrench on square end of extension try turning filter off.
EDIT* -- I used 1/2 inch set for illustration, 1/4 inch should work just fine, see a few threads down for more suggestions.
sliding T-handle
- Sliding T-handle for sockets.
- Extension Bar for T-handle (as long as needed)
- Wrench to fit end of Extension as leverage.
- 2 long cap screws with large washers that fit in holes (not sheet metal screws.)
Put extension on t-bar, place t-bar under washers.
With wrench on square end of extension try turning filter off.

I like the idea, but don't forget I'm really tight on space. These have all given me some good ideas. Looks like everybody loves a creative challenge. I can't believe they expect me to work this afternoon when I could be home working on the car.

I forgot to mention in my post, I used 1/2 inch drive only for illustrative purposes, and that I didn't have any 1/4 inch nearby. 1/4inch should be able to work for you. Plus if you use fender washers you may be able to cup them a little to help hold the t-handle in place. You may have to use a universal joint socket (tape it up so it doesn't wobble as much) or wobble extension to help with the clearance issues. Keep adding extensions as needed for clearance!

Success at last. It just took my water line tool a couple bolts and six wood braces. The bolts through the braces mounting holes were the perfect size so that when I put bolts through the mounting holes they were nearly perfectly lined up with two crosswise drain holes. The water main tool fit over the brace/bolt combo and I had plenty of room to torque away. Thanks for the ideas everybody.
