Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL), often referred to here as a "3rd brake light", was required from 1986-onward in the US. Some early production MY86 cars came without it though, I think through a production dating loophole.

I have never seen an 85.5 with one from the factory.

It came into effect in 1986...my 85.5 didnt have one either. Bought one for like $20 at the dealer and hooked up.
