Default Need tires for my 968, suggestions?

93 968 -
Currently have Michelin Pilot Sports. Currently running rears - 17" 255/40 and front - 17" 205/50 on stock Porsche turbo twists.

I sorta like the current tires, but I feel like they are not so good in the rain or cold and NOISY.

Anyone have any suggestions on a tire that will grip in the rain, be not so slippery in the cold and QUIET!!!

Notice I need a QUIET tire! The road idiots here in Texas have this new thing about something called "chip-n-seal". It's a cheap alternative to asphalt but it is NOISY if you're driving with low-profile tires.

I don't want to go cheap, I want quality...suggestions?

p.s. it's my daily driver...

i would change to 225/245 setup to get rid of some of that understeer. i bet it plows like a truck. my S2 did with 205/245s. I have 225/255 on my 951 and think it has a bit more understeer than desired, but that can be fixed with adjustments to my sways.

back on topic.

I have pilot sport a/s on my S2 225s all around and they seem decent in the cold. they were nice in the rain at lime rock, are not noisy, etc. i will pprobably be able to tell you how they work in the snow within the next few weeks.

Tom - some questions...
"plows like a truck" - please be more desriptive, no race lingo please
understeer is where the rear end goes out first, yes?
you're saying run 222/50 on the front and 245/40 on the rear?
That would be a slightly wider tire in the front and a slightly narrower tire in the rear, correct?
So you're saying that these tire sizes make the car handle better and be able to go around turns faster?

sorry for my "don't know the lingo" frame of mind - just never raced or tracked a car

understeer is actually the opposite: when you try to turn but physics only allows you to travel in a "straighter" direction, regardless of whether your wheel is turned fully or not.

Oversteer is when the rear end of your vehicle "drifts" around, and one must compensate by turning the wheel in the opposite direction.

I'm looking for a quiet tire also. Pilot Sport and S03s are good tires but definitely not quiet.

BF Goodrich G Force Sports. I have 17" Boxster Sport Classics on my 968 with these tires. Not sure of the size off the top of my head. They have worked well for me on both wet and dry roads and best of all, they are quiet. I even had them on for one small snowfall before I took them off for the winter season. My 968 is my daily driver also but has not seen any track work. Not sure how the tires would perform there.

I actually know of 4 cars with these tires and we all love them.

Thanks, all,

I've heard from quite a few people very positive comments about BF Goodrich G Force Sports. Looks like I may be heading that direction.

Muchas gracias!!

My Yoko EVS 100s Z rated - have been great. 225/255 x 17s. Quiet and handle great. Lasting longer than I expected. Wearing very evenly. Manual Steering, so I have to hang onto the wheel at all times. Oversteers on hard, fast corners, but have removed the spare for reduced weight and usually keep the tank on half full or less. So there's not much weight back there to keep it grounded.

You might try the Avon M500's that you can get from Tire Rack. They are MUCH quieter than the Pirelli's that they replaced.

Good Luck,

Phil

An issue....practically all new tires are quiet at first...but at about 10K-15K miles that often changes.

"Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you."

Understeer is when you reach the slip angle of the front tires before the rear, and oversteer is the exact opposite. Understeer will have you "plowing" (you reach the slip angle and can no longer turn in) into a turn and oversteer will have the back-end wanting to come out through a turn. 205's are a pretty small width for any sports car of our size and weight. Tire compound has an effect on this of course. What I mean to say by that is even with relatively skinny 205's or 225's, if they are something really grippy like an R compound or Hoosier dry race slick, then they will handle lightyears better than the same sized tire with a street-oriented compound. The front turbo twists are either 7" or 7.5" (can't remember) and you can easily fit a 225 on them, which will help a bit. For an even nicer setup, you can run another pair of the rear 17x9's in the front with 255's all around which will make for a seriously improved setup. The 951 has a decent amount of understeer in stock form and wider tires in both the front and rear (especially the front) will help the car handle much better and you'll be able to go around corners faster. It's all ultimately about managing the slip angle.

Sassilverbullet, you already have 255/40/17's in the rear, which is a decent size. I wouldn't go any smaller than this in the rear. In the front I'd run a 225/45/17 if you have the 7" or 7.5" wide twists.

Speedbump - ROFL!!!! I can't get off the floor...

Porschefile - you're in Austin huh? You need to come join the longhorn region for an awesome drive through the best twisties in Texas on March 11th. See our website, http://www.longhornpca.org for more info.

I went ahead and got Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's all around. I found I had the wrong size tires on the front according to my owner's manual. I put 225/45 on front, 255/40 rear, 17" both ends.

Car handles x8 better at least! After about 100 miles I went through some turns that my rear end was sliding out at 30mph at over 40mp and it wasn't even starting to slide!

Yeeha! Twisties here I come!

I would recommend the Goodyear Eagle GS-D3 tires as those are rated one of the best for all around.
