Default tired alternator or tired voltage regulator?

In my 83, I have low power until the revs cross over 3,000 rpms, then it's up to normal. I discovered this while I was driving home from work and noticed my all my lights get brighter at 3K. Then, the next night I started it up, idled and the lights were dim. I stabbed the thrittle to get it to 3K and the lights jumped up in brightness and stayed there the rest of the drive. Does this sound like an alternator going bad? or a voltage regulator? thanks!

Also make sure the alternator is properly grounded to the block.

Well, I changed the voltage regulator and I still have the exact same problem. I installed an odyssey battery, and cleaned all the battery terminals. I swaped the voltage regulator with a brand new bosch unit. I still have under 13V until RPMS crest over around 3,000 rpms. Then I had roughly 13.6-13.8 at idle. I'm kinda stumped...does this mean the alternator is going out? I had autozone check it before I reinstalled it and it checked good across the board....

Mine does that also and I put a new voltage regulator on recently too.

Sounds like a loose belt, with engine off try to turn the alt. fan by
hand. Try really hard! If you can turn it the belt is not tight enough.

its not a belt..its an electrical issue.....it has to be alternator related....

Bosh alternator won't produce much voltage, it's the amps you need to be concerned with.

Oh, now I get to say, ask me how I know.

Damn it! It can be a belt issue! It takes a lot of power to run the alternator and at low
RPM the belt can slip. When you rev it up the belt gets hot and sticks to the pulley
and makes the volts and amps come up.
