Default Can you convert/transform a 944 n/a into a 944S?

Suppose I got a 944S head....could I bolt it onto my 944 n/a? I assume that I would need some other parts and what not, but what else? Could it be that easy?

944S has higher comp pistons, a backwards intake manifold, special intake piping....... the list goes on...

It would be easier to buy a complete S engine and swap it in.

Hey guys chill out. try answering the question instead of starting stuff.

Yes, like Jesse said it would be easier to just get an S engine and swap it over. However if youre going to do all that work, it might be easier to get a turbo engine and swap it because youll have more power to play with. In that sense it would be easier to just buy a turbo blah blah blah

"Rock" you should really give back the computer to the german-speaking mad man that you stole it from...

Seriously though, i agree with the Rock. It would probably be easier/cheaper to just do a ull swap. (he would know!)

Wow, thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Which took more of your time, to read my post or to come up with your witty retort?

But generally searching on something like "944S" yeilds only a million threads or so

Thanks to the rest of you...

yeah it could be done, I thought about it but its not worth it overall. Differences are head, pistons, intake, exhaust, afm, dme, possible wiring harness, tach markings, side badging, crank sensors, etc. I have the pistons if you are serious about this.

I'd likely skip the side badging or order to build a sleeper. What does the tach look like? I guess if I'm going to so all that for 30 hp, I might as well go full tilt and get an S2 motor, etc. Unless I got one uber cheap.... Hmmm.

I installed a 2.5 'S' motor into my '88' 944 about 10 months ago to replace a tired 8V motor. It's a pretty straight forward swap but you MUST get the complete front wiring harness along with the 'S' motor. This is because the 'S', 'S2', and the 928 32v use the ignitor system to fire the plugs which the 8v motors don't. The 8v wiring harness doesn't have the connections for the ignitor which mounts behind the driver's side headlight. You also need a few small things. PM me if you are serious.

don't expect 30HP over the 944. it's not that much more powerful over the 8V n/a. you have to keep the car at high revs to use it.

IMHO, the change to 16v is well worth it. The displacement is the same so don't expect a big jump in torque. There is a bit more torque, but the top end on the 16v motors sparkle. Take a look at the size of the two air metering boxes and you'll see why the 'S' motor has more hp.

With that said I love the whole 944 motor line.

True, I swapped an S into my n/a.
Very nice on the top end. Maybe not huge, but nice.
