uh, it IS 30hp more than the standard 944 (188 vs 158).

i totally agree with the last two posters....much more rev happy above 4K than the 8 valve, and hence a funner track car. but to VA Steve....the block number is different than the 8v block, so that's another thing that goes against swapping heads.

Ok, here's a question. Can I use 16V piston and rods in a n/a block? Will it increase my compression? Would it be of any value at all? I have an '87 turbo block I'm rebuilding for n/a use.

the blocks are the same. you just can't swap in 16V pistons and attempt to use the 8V head.

For those of you that did the swap, how much did you pay for the motor and all the trimmings (DME, wiring, etc)? I see S2 and 968 motors come for sale more often and (probably) more money.

You'd skip the side badging to make a sleeper? Please.

Most people out there don't know what the hell a 944 is. They see "sports car, Porsche - gee, it must be fast" by default. If you want to make a "sleeper", make it out of a Vega or another car that's generally assumed to not be all that fast to begin with. If you want to make a "sleeper" out of a 944, you better at LEAST double the stock power, not just add a lousy 30 hp to it.

I'd agree. A 3k pound car with 188 hp does not make a sleeper. You'd still be eaten alive from a stop light by nearly everyone in a 5 year old Civic.

Appreciate you car for what it is. A well built "sports car". If you want to play with more power and mods and are willing to do the work of a motor swap there are many 951s that can be had for a good price. Then power will only be limited by the depths of your pocket book.

Of course if you want to do it just for fun and to say you did it, have at it. Personally I love to hear what people do to their cars. Doesn't have to make sense. Just be realistic about your goals for the car and do it.

Oh sorry, P-o-P, I meant sleeper in terms of the informal competition on the track between other 20 year old Porsches: 944's/SC/Carerras with the big boys, not boy racer "kills" at the traffic light. Run a couple of years with folks who walk you on the straights while ctaching them in the curves....then start keeping up with them on the straight as well? Priceless.

I'ver already replaced the motor once, when I spun a rod bearing. I "just" dropped in another n/a engine...I probably should have gone bigger. I'm trying to avoid the 951 route due to the extra work required when wrenching on the turbo.

The valve reliefs are all different (twice as many and in the wrong place.)

This should be good reading..even though its an S2 engine i think the logistics of the swap are almost exactly the same.

The 968 swap might actually be a bit easier as wiring is concerned because it does not use the ignition control unit.
