paragon rebuilt water pump
Paragon's rebuilt pumps seem a lot cheaper than other places I've seen.
Anyone have any experience? The pump I need is the one that fits the 2.7, the S2, and the 968.

I wouldn't put a rebuilt on the car, but that's just me. The reason being is if it siezes and fails, it takes out the t belt. Now most rebuilds carry a warranty, but if you read the fine print, it only covers the actual waterpump, not any other damage. Care to risk that one?

I just got my first 944 and I'm getting a mechanic to do the tbelt and water pump replacement. All he does is imports, I don't know how many 944s specifically, but he thought that the rebuilt would be okay and that the new pumps were "extremely prohibitive" in price. Where can you get a new pump for a 2.7? How long would a new pump last compared to a rebuilt? I mean, if the rebuilt lasts more than half as long, it is less than half the price of a new from what I've heard.

Personally, I wouldn't allow anyone who doesn't have experience explicitly on 944s (or 928/924s) to do a Timing Belt/Water Pump Job on my car.
By imports do you mean European, or Japanese? The 944 does need a specific tensioner tool as well.
Also note most change out rollers, and other items involved in your belt at the same time. There are several dealers that sell whole kits. Vertex, 944online, etc.

Avoid Vertex if possible. I had more problems with them getting the order correct than was worth the trouble. One other source would be Zims. Good folks.

Ditto, Zims. Cheaper price, twice the warranty. While you are in there; Zims has the front seal kits WITH the races for the same price that others charge for just the seals.

Don't go with a aftermarket rebuilt pump. I went with one on my S2 when I did the T-belt/Waterpump just last spring. It failed within the first 3500 miles. I then bought one a Porsche Factory one. and it has held up fine its just that in the end it did cost me more money(I did it the first time) and I had the Dealer(P-car delaer where I worked) do it the second time and I figured it out even with the employee discount it still would have been cheaper to go with the Porsche Pump the first time. Bite the bullet and buy a Porsche Pump.

My mechanic does European imports almost exclusively. Every now and then he gets a MkIII supra or something in there. We're doing seals and pulleys and belts along with the pump. He has all the tools and has done this job several times before. I brought up the rebuilt pump problem and he said he hasn't had problems with the ones he has installed. We haven't done the job yet. What's the verdict, a Porsche pump?

Does Porsche sell a rebuilt unit? If so then I would assume it is every bit as good as a brand new pump. A rebuild should include new high quality bearings, seals and a new shaft at the very least. The pump casting doesn't wear out and under normal circumstances I wouldn't expect the impeller to either.

Paragon and others sell a new pump (I think that is where I bought my new pump). Can't think of the company that makes it but it would be cheaper and just as good as the one bought at the dealer. Probably the same pump.

Just for kicks I shopped around a bit....Hope you are sitting down for this one.
New Porsche water pump for S2 from Pelican.....$706.75
Holy sh$t, for that kind of dough I would try and dodge a bullet rather than biting one.
I would go w/ Zims without a doubt.
Good luck, Mike

Called my mechanic
rebuilt pump (from who knows where) $147
Total parts cost: $630
"I found a new pump kit with all those things for $545"
"You won't get any warranty from me, and I'll charge more for the labor."
Man. That sucks.
He says he's never had anyone come back in with a problem with one of these pumps. Don't know where he gets 'em from but I guess they're at least quality rebuilt. If it goes to leaking or anything then I'll do it myself the next time. Right now I've got more money than time, since school has started and autox season is approaching. We'll see.
