How tough is water pump replacement
My new to me S2 has 54000 miles. The prior owner changed the belts and water pump at 16,000 miles and the belts again at 48,000(about 1.5 years ago) but not the waterpump.
Should I replace the waterpump now...This car is destined for track duty and street. If so is it a reasonale DIY job??
Thanks
Jeff

Do you know if the last pump was a rebuild or new. But the job is not that bad. It's just not a quick job. Do the research on the proceedure and the tensioning for the belts and you will be fine. Just plan on a long weekend. I got it down to a day the last time. Not so lucky the first.

Pump should be changed every 2 belt changes, that equates to every 60-90k miles depending what school of thought you follow with changing your belts. Of course it should replaced as needed regardless, the obvious being if its leaking or making noise or the not so obvious of there being lateral play in the pulley.
Its not a difficult job, but requires a bit of work. Mainly setting TDC, locking the flywheel in place, removing the crank gears and the rear timing cover. Its all of that on top of a regular belt job.

The pump can be changed without removing the rear timing belt cover. It requires some maneuvering and bending the cover. It helps to have a second person assist. Definitely expect a day's work if you are new to the process.

it's not really hard to replace but kind of time consuming especially if you have to wait for parts that you may forget to order. you will need a few special tools (flywheel lock, pin wrench).
replacing a water pump may actually not be so easy if you break a bold or stud in the block, if they are really old they are most likely seized up and they break easily and then you'll have to drill them out and tap in new threads. Also it's easy to strip the aluminum threads and that is pretty time consuming again.
you'll definately need 2 torque wrench one for the small bolts , inch pounds and a larger foot pounds wrench.
