Can you start an auto 944 in D?

Default Can you start an auto 944 in D?

Can you start a 944 in drive? Aparrently my 944 starts in all gears but drive.

Its not supposed to. There is some wiring in the center console that should disable the starter, you should be able to start it in neutral and park.

If you bypass the neutral safety switch (NOT recommended) by the shifter, you can start in all gears.

The fact that they put the word "safety" in the name of the switch supports the recommendation that it not be bypassed.

Back in the day, like 1957. The lincoln continental mk II only started in neutral which was on the other end of the lever from park.

PRNDSL became universal in the late 60s early 70s as a result of lawsuits. They put N in the middle so people wouldnt accidently be in R thinking they were in D.

One of the textbook cases involved someone in a toronado in the wrong gear.

A potential buyer for my 944 apparently was extra thorough in his inspection of the car. I'm not sure why someone would want to start in drive though. If it is anything like starting a 924 manual in gear... there would be a lot more accidents in 944s.
