Yeah, any help would be appreciated.

One of the damn 5mm hex bolts that holds on the intake manifold has stripped, so I'm sort of stuck in the teardown process until I can get this thing out. I already tried using a torx bit to see if that would get grip (no), and the positioning of the bolt won't let me hack a slit in it with a grinder to use a screw driver to get it out.

 

You will probley have to drill the head off.

 

Get a bolt extractor, not an easy out.

Sheet metal guys are known to weld an extra nut onto the stripped bolt. If you can carefully get to it.

 

Its probably easiest to drill the head off the manifold bolt as there is not a whole lot of room in there.

 

The bolt head will drill off very easily.

Sorry, my vote would be -1000, unless your fully familiar with the limitations this type of tooling has, and the experiences of using such.

Drill the head off. THAT in itself, is enough challenge, if ya haven't done this sort of thing before. Good luck!!

 

Cool, thanks for the opinions everyone. I ended up getting a set of these http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...cemldffidfmm.0 , so I'll see if they work tomorrow. I was too pissed off about sears not having all the sockets I wanted to buy (5mm, 6mm allen head socket) and didn't get back to working on it again tonight.

That kit I got drills into the bolt/screw and then has some angled threads to bite into the drilled hole to hopefully get it out.

 

Ditto on the Craftsman set, they saved me many times over the last 3 years.

 

Or use left handed drill bits.

 

I've been trying forever to find a set of these but no one has any. Its really pissed me off - we had a set in autoshop in highschool and they were the greatest things ever. This thing I got looks like it may do close to the same thing.


As for the other socket ones, do those work on round bolts?

Yes they do especially if you tap them a bit with a socket extension first. I've actually had trouble getting the cap screw out of the socket it bit down so well. I avoid drilling in confined spaces if I have a choice. If you break off an easy-out type tool you will never be able to drill it and end up using the bolt remover socket anyway. Intake manifolds are not torqued that much anyway so the socket type removal tool should work fine.
