Thumbs down OT: I hate snow. 944 stuck

I went to my night classes at about 6:30 tonight and it was very lightly snowing. It was so light I couldnt imagine it being a problem. I get out early at 8:15 and there is an inch outside. Okay, not bad I can make it home. I start driving home and 1 inch turns into 3. I am unable to get up a big hill that I live on top of and now have the 944 parked in a random gas station. The worst part is its next to a damn port o potty. I hate snow

Yep, we're getting it good here in Seattle too.

There's a trick to going up a hill in snow. Do NOT loose your momentum. I can get up any hill without any problem, as long as I have a clear running head start. Downtown Seattle hills? NO problem.

The tires can make or break these cars in the snow. I have Michelin Pilot MXX3s on my 944 and they just look at the snow and kinda laugh. I've been stuck in a level driveway with less than 3" of snow because of those tires.

But if it makes you feel any better, I once got my Scirocco bogged down. In my old neighborhood, we'd have this long, straight downhill, with a sharp right-hand turn going uphill followed immediately by another sharp left-hand turn. That area would get pretty sloppy so when it was deep, the best hope I could have would be to get some momentum and yank the parking brake around each turn (best if no neighbors are around!). Normally it worked, but I still got bogged one time at about 2 am. I had to walk the rest of the way home, wake my dad and get him to walk back with me to push it.

He gave me a very hard time for it...

BB.

I drove the 944 once in the snow. Quite the adventure. It was in Seattle, and it was the same scenario. Was barely snowing when I left home but by the time I started back, there was at least two inches on the ground. Almost spun on an onramp to the freeway, with concrete walls on either side, but got it home in one piece at about 10mph. No fun, and yes at the time, my tires sucked.

Buy four skinny snow tires-and don't try just two, the car will be totally undriveable. With four snows on my old 85.5 and my old 968 coupe I could drive very comfortably in up to 8 or 9 inches. I used 16" Boxster wheels on the 968 with spacers, they dug in great, although dry grip was about 70% of my normal 17" setup. I used to love to take them off in the spring and push the car again.

For the record, I have never seen Damian push his car - by hand or behind the steering wheel.....

Another snow day in Seattle and my '88 is at the shop (alignment and motor mounts) and I was going to pick it up today but thats looking doubtful right now just because the hill I live on is iced in every direction.
At least you got to abandon your car at a gas station, on the news they're saying that people who abandon their vehicles on the roads will be towed and impounded.

Z, I'm sure you were behind me on a Bear Mtn run or three . . . but I do follow the 'track bad, wax good' philosophy mostly.

I really dont understand how people get stuck in the snow or cant get up hills. That's like what, 3" of snow? I've driven in storms in my old e30 with bald tires, or 6 year old hockey pucks and not had a trouble. That's lake effect storms, where we're talking 6" of snow on the road, front bumper plowing through.

That might be 2" of snow in that pic... smooth inputs, bud. Smoooooth inputs.

I wish we got some friggin' snow here, but here in Norfolk, when everyone else gets snow, we get horizontal rain and sludge.

i personally avoid driving my 924S in the snow...I'm sure if I invested in snow tires and skinny wheels, it'd be ok, but considering i park it next to an a4 with snows already on it, just seems kinda silly to risk damaging the 924

The problem isnt really the snow its the other drivers on the road. Washington is one of those states where they give out drivers licence's if you can drive around the block without losing control which means the slightest adverse conditions produce chaos and gridlock. Its Fun driving in the snow but it aint fun stuck in gridlock watching the mercury sable in front of you redlining it on a little patch of ice.
But the flipside is that it doesnt happen here very often and when it does you get to stay home.

Damian,
Never did a Bear Mountain run with the Porsche crowd - did a couple with the MR2 club, though. When I saw a Supra that joined us spin out on top of Storm King Highway, I decided that informal street rallies aren't worth the risk... (I'm problably slower than you on the street...)

...but I always take the risk to bust your chops...

Back on topic - though I don't typically drive my Porsche in the snow, my bro-in-law used to, since it was his only car. He found that 2 big bags of sand in the hatch made a world of a difference in the snow. If you can't afford snow tires, at least go with extra weight in the back - it will help give you more traction.

Dodged blizzards back from WI two years ago w/ all season Cooper MasterCraft's, they worked very well.

Get some winter rubber.
