Default Has This Been Done To A Clutch Before?! Pics!

I think i'll let the pictures do the talking:

And also i have some questions because the previous owner (3 years and 30k ago) said that the clutch had been replaced... now he did seem like an honest man, but as you notice, the clutch is the stupid rubber donut kind, and i heard that they were still making replacements in the early 90's i believe, but that they discontinued making them because they sucked. Now for any of you that know clutches does this one look like it still had some life left in it. i was quite surprised that the rubber was in perfect condition... but still its hard to believe that they'd replace it with a rubber one. also right now the car has 130k, i bought it at 100k and the P/O said that he couldn't remember when the clutch had been replaced, but that it had been done.

also i can get more pics of the pressure plate if needed.

EDIT - Oh and BTW the new metal clutch is awesome!!! now i can accelerate and decelerate without jerking. its SOO smooth!!!!!

I would say that looks like a classic donut failure. It isn't unusual for there to be plenty of friction material left. Now the turbo clutch demise above, that IS extreme!

Kirk,
You do the clutch job yourself or have someone around here do it?

No i did not do it myself, but i had it done at my shop (can anyone say "discount") so i got to see the whole process and help along the way. And now having seen it done, i feel confident about doing it myself, though it still would take a while to do, not to mention that if i did do it myself that i wouldn't have a lift which makes it 100% easier!

and to everyone else who posted those turbo clutches.... my god i can just immagine the amount of power that those broke under. lots of boost eh?

wow... lol now was it a natural thing or an all of a sudden thing like mine? (i guess thats what happens when your playing around in the wet...)

also was that the original clutch for your 87 S? if so that sucks for me because mine was a year newer and still not upgraded from the rubber clutch...

If you clean up the clutch disc it will have the build date printed on it and that will tell you if it's original or not. Mine had a date of 9/82 for my 83 when it went out at 160K

Mine is going and I am going to attempt it in a week or so. I've never done one. Just got a fidanza fly and centerforce clutch kit (stage one). Hope to see a big improvement

Testing my memory here, but I think replacing a rubber center with a new rubber center was not that uncommon. I think I've even heard knowledgable people state that they might still install one today for "drivability and feel", over the spring centered.

I think it's possible that it was the second rubber type on the vehicle??

Maybe I'm wet on this one???

I took that clutch disc out of a customers S2 (track only, stock class) Catastrophic failure. The clutch only had a few events on it.

PorscheDoc......

Hope you don't mind me reposting you pic. I grab all pics of catastrophic failure of parts.
Never seen anything like that disc, and probably never will again.
