Default Oil Cap Seal

Perhaps someone has been down this road before (search didn't locate anything useful). I ordered a new oil cap seal for my early 85 and found that it would not fit my (OEM) oil cap 944.107.191.00. The seal I bought was (supposedly) 999.701.653.40, which according to the PET should be the correct one. However, it was too small in diameter and the groove in the oil cap isn't deep enough to hold it if stretched to fit. I seem to vaguely remember running into this a long time ago when I rebuilt the engine and ended up re-using the original seal. The PET does show a part number change for 85 to 85.5 changeover - the new cap is 944.107.091.01 and, near as I can tell, it uses a different seal, 999.701.846.40. If that isn't enough the AOS also changed part number at the changeover. So can anyone verify that the new cap will properly fit the old AOS?
