i got the momo adapter too. had to get it from performance. the $15 wasnt bad for the part. The $7 shipping hurt a bit, but it makes the job at least $25 simpler. i put a piece of tape betweeen the adapter and rod, and a small hose clamp on the bottom to help quash the vibration.

I had a lot of rattling. Now it is minimal. I cut down the adapter and the shifter shaft and used a solid, smaller (CF) ****. I also wrapped the bottom of the adapter with stretch and seal rubber tape and it seemed to aleviate most of it. Also, do a complete rebuild on the shifter assembly. The OE is is very dampened by rubber bushings, etc. I also used FR Wilks suggestions for rebuilding the linkage with some model copper tubing. Here is the only pic I have of it. I can take more if needed.

Would you be able to take some pictures and show what you did without the boot on? I know this id an old most likely dead thread but might as well try.
