Besides the Fiberwerks hatches, are there alternatives if we decide we do not want to sacrifice a first born for a replacement hatch? Has anyone done a 928 type hatch mod for a 944?

Plyhammer in OH has one, $225 obo
He's a good guy - don't know about shipping the sucker, though.
I'd expect hatches to be relatively cheap and plentiful in CA.

Thanks for all the offers. The reason I ask is because the seal on my hatch is deteriorating. From previous threads, it seems very few people will do this job, let alone not break the glass. I was thinking if I can not get someone to do this, I would consider welding two pillars and making it a 3 piece rear like the 928 using commonly available parts (Honda, Toyota, or Nissan). If anyone has seen this done before, post a link.

944 Hatch Reseal

+1 on doing it yourself. I think that's the only way it'll look right and it looks to be the easiest/cheapest route.
KCWS!
That seems like it would be more work, and more expensive, than doing the reseal. There are a lot of curves back there, and getting everything to look right and match up could be a major PITA.
Though, if you have to go that route... check out the hatch on the 1st generation Mazda RX7. I never measured or compared, but the 1st gen RX7 was very similar in size and shape to the 924, but had the 3-piece hatch (and the 2nd gen RX7 was very similar to the 944

I say try the reseal, learn from your experience, then post it.
Then if you are feeling frisky go nuts with the fab work. You screw it up, you can always buy another car/body for a couple hundred
