Good mechanic near NYC?
Ha! Well. Title says it all, I'm just looking for a competent, honest shop near the city. Preferably right in Brooklyn. Now, it doesn't need to be a Porsche mechanic (I'm "between Porsches" right now). I just don't have a garage/driveway, and I need someone who knows their stuff and won't screw me or tell me "it was about to break anyway."
I'm distrustful of mechanics (both ethically and skillfully), and I'm distrustful of New Jersey and the boroughs, so. I'm nervous about the whole thing, but if I go another month without a car I'll lose my mind. I have to expect that work will need to be done, and I know I'm not able to do most work myself.
Filter changes, front end work, ball joints, fuel pump, tranny fluid, brakes, you know...Regular car stuff. Any good recommendations will help me sleep.

I can tell you who NOT to go to. Does that help a little?
Stay away from Bergen Imports in cliffside, NJ. I have seen too many nice cars butchered by them, I have lost count.

I don't know how far you are willing to travel, but Val and Jon at Great Neck Auto Tech are great guys. I don't know that it's the right place to have rebuild your Porsche engine, but as far as more common car stuff they are the place to go for anyone who lives around there. They do good work, and are honest, I have used them for years (well, when I lived in NY at least). They are in Great Neck, obviously, here is the number: 516 487 4210.

The best and most reasonable 924/944 guy around is Will DiGiovanni of Precision Motorsports Racing of Califon, NJ 908-832-6572. You will not go wrong but it is a hike. Then you have PowerTech in Rockaway NJ 973-361-7743. Bob Kakascik of Euro Perf/Stable Energies in Garfield. 973-773-8300. Does great work but get a solid quote before you let him work on the car. There is also Gene Kirschner of Autohaus in Chatham NJ. 073-701-8300 very reasonable pricing and Tony Henderson in Pompton Lakes 201-725-5200.
All of these do excellent work and know their stuff. Make sure you discuss pricing with all before you have the work done. Some are more reasonable than others, all do great work.
Good Luck

Thinking about it further. Autosport in Englewood, NJ was pretty good to me. They were pretty good with the 944. But I did not have major work done. But they treated the car well.

This is great, guys, keep 'em coming. My hope is to find a great shop near Williamsburg, but it will be great to have a good radius (especially when I break my *** down on some parkway).
For the record, I asked the same question on my other Smart People forum (ArsTechnica).

R.O.C.S. Auto in Belleville, NJ (about 10mins thru the lincoln or holland tunnel)
Rich and Victor are the owners...both are P-car guys and Rich (and maybe victor) are PCA members and racers. Honest, sincere and responsible.....(and since Victor drives Rich's old 91 S2 they know my car!)

They're just moving in to their new garage in Ridgewood. I'm friends with the owner. I tend to do all my own work but when I need someone to do the job faster than I would, with the same quality that I would, I send it to them.

there is a guy Zakus in brooklyn. he used to be on franklin and west broadway in tribeca until tribeca became too good for an auto repair shop.
my brother used him for a few things on his 944. a bit pricey but he speaks like he knows what he is doing. in only met him for a minute or two in passing.

By the by, I had Val at Great Neck Auto Tech look at my Chevy Astro that was vibrating pretty fiercely on the highway. He traced it down to a bent driveshaft. The dealer wanted $700 for a new one, the manufacturer wanted $400, Val sourced me a used one for $150. With a new U-Joint, the total cost of the job was $400, all-in, and he left me a few extra balance weights in case the ones on the driveshaft fall off.
Throughout the whole thing he communicated with me over the phone as new things developed. That's a good shop and I will go back.
