Default megasquirting 951's

Hey there,

I'm interested in first hand experience with megasquirt on a 951. I would appreciate if any of you who have done this could respond to let us know what you've done, how you went about it, what lessons you've learned, what features you've taken on and anything else you can think of.

If you don't know what megasquirt is, please aim your browser at megasquirt.info first so that we can keep this thread for Q&A.

I'm looking at this from an holistic engine management point of view, including fuel injection, ignition, boost management etc.

I'm agonizing whether or not to build my 951 as a PCA GT car with a megasquirt or commercial engine management. But, that decision isn't really subject of this thread and would be off-topic. But it is relevant to me and to this thread because emissions and street use isn't the primary focus for me personally.

Best regards,
Christian

Someone standing behind their product > solder it yourself engine management. On a turbo neon, sure use Megasquirt, on your 951, do it correctly, go AEM/Tec3R/Motec from someone offering a complete solution with tech support behind their product.

Once you're at the track, "support" (even commercial) becomes very relative.

You can obtain megasquirt readily assembled.

Im just about to head out to the pub to watch the Vancouver vs Calgary game (Calgary sucks!) but heres some links to other threads/sites for reading material. Once im back from the pub (assuming a reasonably thinking friendly blood alcohol level) ill answer everything as best as I can. Hopefully Alex will chime in at some point with his experiences (I know he loves his MS ).

When a product isnt a "black box" so to speak, you tend to be able to figure out many things by yourself. Especially if youve put it together yourself and wired it in yourself.

*shrugs* As long as it isnt past 10pm, or before 8am I dont hesitate to call someone I've bought parts from with a question or troubleshooting if I cant figure it out. Weekends or weekdays. Especially someone I've bought management from. I figured I'd come under fire from the megasquirt fanboi's. You shouldnt ask for opinions if you dont want them. I'll never run megasquirt on a boosted motor I care about.

Dunno, I'm actually speaking from experience here, on both sides of the management field.

Never had a mystery failure on my engine management, seen them on other's megasquirts (like when an injector driver fails). Seen engines blow on megasquirt due to megasquirt components failing. I've seen Tec3's fail (2, total) on the same car (not mine), which leads me to believe something was wrong there, but it took out the ECU not the engine. I've also seen mystery failures on Megasquirts which cause things to just randomly stop running. No factory backing, no thanks.

It's a GREAT CHEAP engine management. But I know what it takes to properly setup a 951 and would NEVER risk that kind of money on a cheap alternative. It'd be like running a 951 on an SAFC, would you do that?

Thanks. So, what is your recommendation then for a PCA GT-3 (sic) 951?

Personal Preferance would be 944 Enhancement's Tec3R solution. That's what I run, not really in the same price category as Megasquirt, but if you're building a GT3R/S car I think you already understand what I mean

Sorry MPD47, you're bit wrong here. "You get what you pay for" is right, but what you get with MS is an ECU with decent resolutionand features if you're willing to (and able to) take advantage of them. What you don't get is constant hassling with little things like "can i use this sensor? No, this is not approved by xxx ECU" etc. MS is highly flexible and only thing I have to say against MS is that it should use more rigid and robust connectors instead computer ones, a bit better CPU wouldn't hurt but anyone who knows even BIT about engine management knows it's more than enough for 8cylinder engines up to 8000rpm w/wasted spark.

For someone who isn't familiar with engine management, there's other options and they cost more, I agree with you on that.

Peace!

Rofl, hardly. The resolution on megasquirt sucks, as does having to add on boards for other features. Sorry I'll take my plug and play solution with backup from a multimillion dollar company (Electromotive) rather than a forum of people who think they know what they are doing.
