Check the rubber seal that should be on the ridge of the firewall and seals against the hood, this is to prevent fumes from getting drawn in through the cabin air fans. And then check the "under boot" which is under the external boot on the shifter.

Thanks! I actually replaced that firewall seal with a new one, as mine was in pretty bad shape, but I am glad you mentioned the shifter, that reminded me to look at that, mine is an automatic, but assume there is a similar boot there as well?

You have to change exhaust manifold gaskets, and the smell of gases comes out
