Well if you price a rebuild, make sure it is from a reputable shop or it can be worse that what you started with. Keep in mind that a rebuild can be a 'slippery slope' - just do the synchros, then hmmm... might as well replace some of the bearings -- if they find the pinion bearing or differential bearings looking worn then a re-shim will be needed to get a new ones set up properly.... Quite a bit of labor involved. With the later model cars I guess the ring & pinion gears should not need replacing which would add another $600 - 800 on top of labor, syncros & bearings.. If you can get a verified low milage trans it might be a better option.
