Default 5000 RPM rev limit?

Got another question... My '83 944 has a severe power drop off right after 5000 rpm, and it feels to me like a rev limiter. The car runs great other than that. Would the engine computer ever do this, or do you think there's something mechanical that I need to take care of? The car hasn't really been run for the past year (I bought it yesterday), so I plan to give it a tune-up and such. I'm just wondering if I should expect that to fix it, or if the computer thinks that something is wrong and has lowered the rev limit on me. I know some cars do that, but I'm not sure if the 944 does or not. According to my guages, the engine is up to operating temp and the oil pressure is good. The fuel gauge or sender doesn't work though, but I wouldn't think that would cause the computer to go into some "limp mode". I searched Google and this forum, but didn't find anything relevant. Thanks for any info.

The '83 DME isn't smart enough to change the rev limit.

I'd look at fuel delivery problems; start with a fuel filter, check the fuel pressure regulator and damper (little vacume thinggys on the fuel rail, don't forget the vaume lines); and if everything else checks out, check the fuel pump itself.

You might also check the output from your AFM. A bad wiper arm track can cause this also and a multitude of driveabliity issues. It makes a dead spot in the throttle. There's a good writeup on retracking the arm to smooth out throttle response. I have the link at home but I'm sure someone else here has it also.

I personally wouldn't be revving an engine past 5000 rpm that I don't know the history of. Especially one that sat around for a year.
