Default Diagnose this starting problem

first off, it is the 89 2.7.

Turn the key and it turns four times... stops for about a half second... turns over and starts.

checked when the POs PO changed the battery and it was about four years ago. decided to be on the safe side so i went to advance auto parts and spent $75 on a autocraft 700CCA battery.

Put the new battery in after cleaning the pine needles out of the battery tray and confirming it is not the source of the water on the floor by the passenger rear seat.

came back a few hours later and started the car. turn the key and it turns four times.... stops for about half a second... turns over and starts.

it doesnt do this all the time.

Any suggestions?

as discussed in another thread

perhaps its just the fact that there isnt enough fuel pressure in the system because the fuel pump only starts to work when you crank the engine not when you put the key into ignition.

Sounds like a problem with the battery cables and/or starter.

Check the main battery cable connections, both the positive and grounds. Also, while you're under there checking the main positive connection on the starter, make sure the starter itself isn't loose - that'll cause this kind of thing.

Did you clean the inside of the main battery terminals, as well as the posts when you put in the new battery?

Does the starter completley stop? Or does it keep cranking, just the engine stops turning over. Could be a problem with the starter solenoid if the engine comes to a stop but the starter keeps cranking.

Otherwise i would bet you have an electrical issues somewhere.

I believe your starter is going kaput.

If your starter is slowing down and then with effort continues to revolve I'd go with starter. If the starter is crisp then I suspect its the ignition switch.

Hmmm. Sounds like electrical connection, ground to starter issues, or as Woodie says - ignition switch is worn out.

Next time you have to get under, or look under the car on a lift, double check the wiring to the starter. Be sure all wiring is well insulated (On the underside of the 944 car the starter electrical harness to the starter is exposed to a lot of water, rocks, grime, crap, and weathering. If the insulation goes bad on those wires .... Yikes!) While you're there, check to be sure the bolts that hold the starter to the car are both tight (On many cars, these bolts are the ground connection for the starter. If they're loose, the ground is interrupted ... and no start). If your starter wiring or ground is poor, the starter's own vibration when turning over could cause that funny pause you describe.

Other than that, wiggle the key in the ignition unit when the engine is running. If you can wiggle the key or turn it toward the off position a little bit with no effect, your ignition unit may be failing, and your starting connection will begin to fail or faulter. Just my experiences.

Good luck!

I had a intermittent starting issue on the 83. The bolts holding the solenoid on the starter body had worked loose causing the ground circuit to open up after a few cranks. Tightened them up and never had the problem again.

Tom, if you do confirm the starter is the problem then ask Dan for the name of the place that rebuilt his starter. He said they did a good job on it.

I'd start with the least expensive option first. The ground wire. I had a similar problem, and replaced the starter, only to find out the wire had corrosion inside. The outside of the cable looked fine, I cut it open and saw why I had the problem.
