Yes, I know what a venturi does. What does the venturi do (as used in out vacuum system)?

I'm pretty sure it is a source of low pressure to encourage the fuel vapors to be draw into the intake. when the engine is running. The intake is under vacuum most of the time so maybe this is for the times when it isn't.
