Default removing heater core, parts needed?

So I've not yet removed the core, but I realized that there are hard lines going from the core to the block. How do i close them after i remove the lines? I would try duct tape, but i think that would not last for long.

is there anything else i need to do, holes i need to plug to remove the core?

thanks!

Hard lines to the block??? On mine, the hard lines coming off the core ended at the firewall, where they were connected to rubber hose. I ran about 18" of 5/8" heater hose from the rear of the hard pipe that runs along the top of the headers, to the other side of the engine where the hose coming from the heater control valve re-enters the engine. From pic 1 to pic 2 below V V V This allows you to remove the core and all the plumbing associated with the heater control valve. You can also remove all the vac lines associated with the climate control, and the vac storage canister.

You will need to plug the ~ 5" triangular shaped hole through the firewall where the AC lines/coolant lines/and vac lines went through. I haven't yet, but will be using a piece of thin aluminum and screwing or bolting it in place.

No problemo! Once you dig in, it will all make sense.

IIRC, the vac lines associated with the climate control only enter the main vac system at the large black hose connected to the brake booster. If you look at my pic 2 above, you'll see a short section of red vac line with a screw in it to "cap off" that vac line. Other than that, all climate control vac lines attached to the firewall and the vac canister can be pulled out. (just make sure your system isn't radically different from mine.)

Jim,
I have 2 questions for you.

1) how did you plug the In and Out hoses to the heater core? or did you just connect them?
2) in my early car there are 2 hard lines that extend into the engine bay, do you know if they are for coolant?

I got the core out tonight and you were right, it was not that big of a problem. Thanks for the help!

1. I connected them. See pics above ^ ^ ^

2. If they're thin aluminum lines that run across the firewall to the driver's side, those are the AC lines. Your car might be different, follow them to see where they go. They're a bitch to remove in one piece, I cut mine with tin snips and removed them in pieces.

WOW thanks!

for the connection did you buy new (longer) hose?

actually they might be A/C lines. Thanks! I'll have to trace them a little better and see.

Get two feet of 5/8" heater hose from any parts store, it'll cost $2 tops. Cut to length, I used about 18".

On my 944 I plugged the line from the waterpump and delted the pipe over the headers. On the other end I pulled of the block and replace it with cover plate. All sealed up. I pulled the heater & A/C lines and put a metal cover on the fire wall and siliconed in place.
