Default How does engine run if 1 tooth off timing?

I replaced a balance belt and timing belt (in addition to new valves). The car idles but runs rough and will not rev up easily. Is this a symptom of being 1 tooth off the timing?

I also drew a lousy diagram and am not sure if I reconnected the spark plug wires in the correct order to the distributor. Does any know what the order is?
(e.g., 1-2-3-4 (1 = front of engine) = top-left, top-right, bottom-rignt, bottom-left on the distributor cap?

Thanks Rennlist gang!

Yeah? Did I ever tell you about the time I yanked all the wires off the BMW 750IL V12?

<--- Scratches head, cusses for 15 minutes, checks references sensor and DME relay, then realizes that the coil isn't connected to the distributor. BTDT.

Did you turn the engine over by hand to check that clearance was ok before firing?

I just leave the wires connected to the distributor, so I don't have to go nuts plugging them back in. They're all different lengths, so plugging them back into the spark plugs is easy!

One dummy mistake I made was to connect the speed & reference sensors vice versa. It took me 2 days to figure that out. Right then, I wrapped one sensor and its plug with blue tape so it would be identifiable.

Thanks everybody! I had switched the #2 and #3 distributor wires.
Runs smooth ....

Lesson learned - change your balance and timing belts if you don't know how the previous owner maintained the car!

I once fixed a belt setup for someone who was one tooth off on the crankshaft sprocket. It ran very rough, barely ran at all, and sounded like a diesel truck, but it did not bend the valves.

It is very easy to be off by a half a tooth, a tooth, or 1.5 on either belt. When you set everything to how you think it should be, and then bring the eccentric tensioner around, once you tighten the eccentric you have to immediately check all the marks again, because there may have been enough slack on the wrong part of the belt that wasn't noticeable until you tightened it.
