Default torque tube or timing belt? or combo

so for a while now my car was making a high pitched whining noise when reving up to 2500 rpm and falling from 2500. it didnt have to be in gear to make the noise..recently i was driving it and noticed a shudder in power while in first gear starting from a stop light, it kept happening. i brought it to the mechanic and he said it was the timing belt..being my car has 88000 miles i figured it was due for a timing belt change but is it the reason for the noise and the shuddering? i read somewhere that when the bearings go on the torque tube there is a noise similar to mine at various speeds. any one wanna help a guy out? thanks

Dude - if your car has 88k on the odo and has never had a TB change............you are one borrowed time! I wouldn't even turn the engine over..........

Tell us where you are, if you are in the Central Texas area I can help you out.

#1 do the timing belt if you dont know when it was last done.

also my guess is that it may be a loose fan belt making the noise? and as to the shudder, some 944's just do that, did you notice the tach falling lower when shuddering and then going back up to normal 800-1k range? some1 can explain it, but some 944's just do that.

oh also, this is what fixed my shudder on my 944, but it could have been totally unrelated. i bought the throttle cam and it seemed to have done it as it has never happend since. maybe it was just finding the right length for the throttle cable?

o yeah...well im in connecticut right now..live in jersey..no where near texas haha but thanks for the offer. Yeah i really feel like i lucked out with the timing belt, im getting it done right now. But with the shudder it was a shudder at first but afterwards it almost felt like i was pressing the gas and releasing the clutch it felt like there was little to no power being given to the wheels only in first gear tho...the mechanic said it was because the timing belt was slipping, is he right? the noise was always towards towards the engine of the car and i know the torque tube is underneath....so the whinning noise is probably unrelated to everything...hopefully itll go away with a new timing belt, water pump, etc. and a good tune up.

Bc4life,
No, your mechanic is a dumb ***. If your timing belt was slipping you wouldn't be driving the car at all. You would have bent valves. Also, it should be noted that 944's have electirc fans so it couldn't be a loose fan belt. It could however be a loose AC/Alternator belt or your Power steering belt. It wouldn't hurt to replace those too in your tune up. Get the timing belt ASAP though. If it goes, it will be costly. Good luck.

yeah i figured what that dude was saying didnt match up with what i know about the timing belt and if it was slipping i figured i would have more damage. I really dont know if it is the AC/altenator and power steering belt, unless they would make the noise with the various rpm speeds. My huge question tho is what could be the reason behind that first gear problem? Clutch? transmission? i got a new clutch about 2000 miles ago so i dont think it could be the clutch.
