My 944 has gotten stuck on a flat driveway in 3" if snow. However, it's also got Michelin Pilot MXX3 tires on it, which is the culprit. Even with those crappy tires, I've been able to get it around without too much drama.
I daily drive my Miata, including in the snow. It has similar characteristics as the 944 when it comes to snow driving, and has the same 50:50 weight distribution. The only real difference is that the car is overall lighter and lower to the ground. With snow tires, I have absolutely no problems whatsoever in snow up to 4-5". Based on that, and what I've heard, you'll have no problems getting a 944 through snow provided you have snow tires on it.

I agree about the defrosting abilities. While the early 944 heating system will do the job, it can be frustrating sometimes. The late 944s have stronger blowers and better vents. The 968 has an oil thermostat which allows the car to warm up very quickly - I don't know if any 944s have that. That is an obvious PLUS for a car destined for winter use.
