precicely, roger.

so to get this straight- if i look in the correct hole, and i dont see the OT mark, but when i do line it up, and the cam gear is at somewhere different, when i put the belts on, do i want the cam gear to be where it's at now?

i dont think my timing is off, or else i'd have more problems than i do already.

Next, you are looking through the wrong inspection hole. None the less you should have seen the mark go by (if you were sitting there watching the flywheel spin.
I find the easiest thing to do is to remove the bottom metal cover from the flywheel/bellhousing (4 bolts?), and find the OT mark down there, then paint it with some white out or a marker of some kind. Re-install the cover and look for it in the top inspection hole (beside the speed/reference sensors, get a box to stand on to help you see it).

yeah, i was down there, i looked at it as it went through 2 rotations as a friend turned the crank.

then he got under and looked as i rotated twice

neither of us saw a mark.

i'll get under there today with a good flashlight (it's gonna be kinda dark when i finally get home tonight ), to see if i can find anything.

although i'm interested in this pulling the coverto get straight at the flywheel.

any pics?

Since mine is already sitting at TDC, here's a picture of where you want to look for the inspection window. It's on top of the bell housing. The first pic shows the general area where you want to look. The second pic has the arrow pointing where you want to look down. The third pic has the inspection window circled. In the pic, you can barely see the "OT" and the line just above it. If you can't (or maybe I can only see it since I know what it looks like!), you still have an idea of where to look for the hole.

Default Look there!

In the square hole will be a visible square notch. MUCH easier to see than the mark up top.

In the last pic with the 'Look Here', you see the black metal cover just underneath the notch (engine side)? That is the cover to take off to see about 1/3 off the flywheel. If you cannot find the OT mark any other way, remove this cover, it will give you a good look at the flywheel. You will be able to see all of the pegs go by and (hopefully) the OT mark as well, where you can paint it.

Line up the OT mark on top, this is the most important mark. Then check the cam mark, it should be lined up, or at least within 1/2 of a tooth. Some variance is normal due to stretching of the belt, or where the slack is located in the belt.

Zero10's advice on taking the lower bellhousing shield off is a good one. That OT mark is nothing more than a fine scratch and very hard to see when rusty. I painted about 1/2" of yellow on either side of the mark and used a hacksaw blade to deepen the mark a bit and filled it with black paint. The bellhousing bottom notch method is accurate also and prevents you from not seeing the TDC mark at top at a right angle, especially on the 951. Unless you are directly over the TDC inspection window you can be skewed enough to get the cam off a tooth or more very easily. By the time the new belt has turned a few times when checking your finished work you'll know if all is still aligned. The balance shaft marks are the ones many mess up the 1st time and often end up with one of them 180 deg. off.

Good luck

Yeah, those marks are hard to see. I missed 'em several times as someone rotated the engine while I was looking. While mine is still up on stands, I'm gonna' paint the mark, if it ever stops raining...
