i read some great posts on oil mixing possibilities and
one of the posts suggested using some detergent to clean out the
expansion tank and radiator of left over residue.
is that safe?
what kind of detergent,oxyclean,shout?
approximately how much?
do i just put it directly in the tank and run it?
i have the gasket kit for the oil cooler rebuild, BUT
due to the minute amount of oil residue i have in the expansion tank only
could it be residue from when i very recently replaced the radiator and hoses?
i trying not to be lazy just need to know if i can safely try the detegent
first,drain system radiator and oil.
i really need some suggestions and help.
thanks,

Rolf,
IMO replacing the radiator and hoses would in no way contaminate the coolant. Be careful, some oil in the coolant isn't that damaging, but if that's happening, and it sounds to me like it is, coolant in the oil is possible at any time from hear forward. Coolant in the oil will wreak havoc on the lower end bearings if not caught quickly!
If the oil cooler seals are original, or are suspected to be original, and if your plan is to keep the car for any great length of time, My 2cents says to replace them asap, and closely monitor the oil and coolant until they are changed.
Sound to me like you need oil cooler seals, and waiting is not really worth it. Why clean the cooling system twice?
I've heard of people using all types of detergents to remove the oily residue. I don't think it is really that critical, any low sudsing detergent will get the job done. I think I used liquid laundry detergent.
Just be sure to let the car fully heat up so the coolant/water/detergent is circulated plenty. For peace of mind you can flush it several times till you are satisfied.
I would use 1/4 to 1/2 cup or so of detergent. Use common sense, don't go nuts.
