Question Belt Adjustment 944S

Is it necessary to have the timing belt adjusted with the "TOOL" on a 944S as there is a tension adjuster already there. I have always taken it to a dealer for an adjustment after I replaced the belts. I read today, however that the 16 valve motor does not need adjustment with the P9201 tool.

I've heard that the s2 motor or 968 motor don't need adjustment as they have a hydraulic tensioner. if the S has a spring tensioner then you have to use the 9201. However if the spring tensioner is working properly then it should probably get you pretty close to proper tension.

It wouldn't hurt to get the tension checked with the tool.
I had a bum tensioner that cost me a couple valve jobs
over the years before we determined it was the tensioner
not applying the proper tension. A new tensioner can be
had for between $200 and $300, if you want to go that
route.

What is the mileage/history on your car? Chances are that your auto-tensioner is probably OK. You can't adjust the belt tension on a 16v engine as you would on an 8v engine which is the reason for the auto-tensioner. If you've got a criket tool you can check the tension with that just to be sure. It's pretty realiable to use.
However, there is an adjustment on the auto-tensioner assembly itself that can be adjusted if you are absolutely **** about belt tension but I've never heard of anyone actually adjusting it.

My car has over 160,000 miles on it and I've done the belts a few times and I personally hate the auto-tensioner as it is a PITA to work with but it does get easier each time you do it....

My 944S has 245,000 miles on it and I have done the belts a few times myself and the tensioner is a PITA as you state. I have changed the tension roller once and will do it again this time. It's good insurance but I hate to give the dealer almost $100 for an initial tensioning and then a retension after the belt wears in(stretches).
