When speaking to a Mercedes-Benz friend of mine, I affectionately call the 944 "Porsche's Turbodiesel". Do the maintenance and they run forever.
I feel that somewhere between 80k and 120k miles, 944s start to feel "broken in" -- they lose that overall crispness of a low mileage car -- but, provided you keep up on the maintenance, they don't change much after that. Yeah, you start replacing those "every 15 years or 150k miles, whichever comes first" maintenance items, but I think more of the old car feeling comes from not keeping it clean and from the vynil parts getting shiny than from anything substantial.

Porsche's don't gain mileage, only experience. :P
Personally my 944 had 85k miles on it when I purchased it. However I was more looking for a maintained, and cared for car, not a perfect stat one.
Most say 100k is when 944's are finally considered broken in. What you really need to look at is not total mileage, but rather; when was the timing belt/water pump changed out, clutch, etc.
As long as its under 200k I wouldn't have too many worries. Over, eh, depends on price, and how much you plan on gutting it.
