As the weather has cooled, my steering wheel shake is back with a vengeance. I'm thinking it's partly very hard tires (800 treadwear rating). The front end was aligned in March. One thing I'm wondering is if a change in suspension geometry would also affect the steering behavior. My PO installed springs with a coil or 2 chopped off- the front bumper height is 1.5" lower than a relative's 944, and there aren't as many visible coils on my car.
My knowlege of suspension geometry is nil- anybody think that this would affect it? I look like I have Parkinson's, the wheel makes an irritating noise sounding like loose plastic- sick of it. Tires have 50% tread, balljoints replaced this year...TIA.

I have that and its a flat spot on the tire, worse in cold weather.

Could be flat spots, they are certainly more noticable in cold weather, but along the same lines if the alignment was not done properly, taking into account the lowering your front tires could be 'cupping' on the inside. Same effect as flat spots, more noticable in the cold, more like a vibration. Easy to check, run your hands across the tire tread, if it feels 'sharp' coming from the inside out, your tires are cupping.

When I bought my car is had a pretty bad steering vibration - it would show up around 60ish, go away 70-80 and the come back above 85. I decided that the PO had the car sitting for a while before I bought it, so the tires were flat spotted - my main reason for figuring this was because driving it back from TX to CA the vibrations definatly got less the farther I drove. But getting the tires balanced made it go away completely.
So yeah, see if the tires need to be balanced.
